Women in Muslim communities face considerable challenges as citizens of India and as members of India’s largest minority. Their poor socio-economic status reflects a lack of social opportunity which, though not a feature exclusive to Muslim women, is exacerbated by their marginal status within an overall context of social disadvantage.
Muslim parents limit access and participation of women in higher education due to gender-based discrimination, coupled with social and cultural barriers. Some attribute these barriers to the teachings of Islam, but this is not true. The teachings of the Holy Prophet of Islam emphasize “the acquiring of knowledge as bounden duties of each Muslim from the cradle to the grave” and that “the quest for knowledge and science is obligatory upon every Muslim man and woman.”
Muslim Women in India suffer from low literacy levels; a literacy rate as low as 19 per cent, which is less than half of that of women from other communities and the national literacy rate for women in general, which is 39 per cent. There is a need for the community to pay greater attention to education in general and women’s education in particular.
